Kate Goodrich departing CMS for Humana

Dr. Kate Goodrich, the chief medical officer of CMS, is departing the agency to take a role with insurer Humana.

A CMS spokesman confirmed Goodrich will be leaving sometime next month. Along with her role as CMO, Goodrich has been the director of the Quality Measurement and Value-based Incentives Group at CMS since 2012. She leads the agency’s quality measurement and public reporting agenda and value-based purchasing programs. She also was responsible for the implementation of MACRA.

Humana didn’t immediately offer details on her new role, but news reports claim she’ll be a senior vice president charged with improving quality outcomes.

Goodrich ranked 13th on Modern Healthcare’s 100 Most Influential People in Healthcare list last year and ranked 8th on last year’s 50 Most Influential Clinical Executives. During her tenure, the CMS came out with the controversial hospital star ratings on Hospital Compare. Goodrich has also been vocal about reducing clinician burden, improving transparency around quality at nursing homes and achieving interoperability.
