DJ Jazzy Jeff Reveals Will Smith Pushed Him To Do “The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air”

DJ Jazzy Jeff recently took some time to reflect on a pivotal moment in his career — landing his role as Jazz on The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air.

On Thursday (September 12), the Hip Hop luminary commemorated the 29th anniversary of the sitcom’s premiere and revealed his co-star Will Smith actually had to push him into doing it.

Nearly three decades later, the sitcom is still one of the most revered shows of the 1990s.

“Wow…29 years ago The Fresh Prince of Bel Air premiered,” Jazzy Jeff wrote. “Crazy how I didn’t wanna do it and Will talked me into it…lesson….Keep your mind open to new things…you never know if your making history. Thx @willsmith for always pushing me. #tbt #FPOB.”

The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air premiered on September 10, 1990 and ran until May 20, 1996. It starred Smith as the lovable but ornery fictionalized version of himself, who moved from West Philadelphia to the wealthy suburb of Bel-Air to live with his aunt, uncle and cousins. Along the way, he and Jazz get into plenty of shenanigans, resulting in television gold.

Uncle Phil (played by the late James Avery) and cousin Carlton (played by Alfonso Ribeiro) as well as Carlton’s sisters Ashley and Hilary (played by Tatyana M. Ali and Karyn Parsons, respectively) added to the show’s already colorful cast.

Smith and Jazzy Jeff, of course, were also the masterminds behind the legendary Hip Hop duo DJ Jazzy Jeff & The Fresh Prince and provided the show’s unforgettable theme song.

The series ran for six seasons and aired 148 episodes.
